What is Obagi?
Obagi is one of the world's leading and most effective premium skincare brands. You may have never heard of Obagi. One of the main reasons for that is Obagi exclusively offers its products through a select network of clinics.
The key reason for this is a large part of the Obagi catalogue are prescription-strength products. This means that a medically-trained (and licenced) clinician needs to prescribe them in order for them to get the most effective results for patients.
Mayer Monroe is one of those clinics that is proud to offer (and specialise) in Obagi.
Our Medical Director, Dr Barbara, has personally used many products for her own skincare routine over the years. She has tried products, some which worked, and some which didn't. The products she tested were not only high-priced products (she also loves a bargain) à la TK Maxx.
Just as when trying any new product, Dr Barbara is very cynical about the claims a skincare company makes about their products and the actual results she would get. She had this same level of doubt when introduced to Obagi. This is especially because of the price some of the premium systems cost.
However, after attending seminars and completing the training on Obagi, Dr Barbara was convinced of the effectiveness of Obagi products.
Why choose Obagi over other skincare brands?
The key thing to remember about Obagi is that its roots are in a pharmaceutical company, not a skincare company (with a big marketing budget). Therefore, all of their products have been rigours tested in a lab environment to make sure that the claims anybody makes about Obagi stand up when tested.
What makes Obagi special?
Because of the laboratory facilities and world-class team at Obagi, they are able to formulate then test products on the skin.

Another reason why Obagi products are so special is they are primarily available through dermatologists, plastic surgeons, medical spas, and other skin care professionals.
Why are Obagi products so expensive?
A lot of money goes into R&D (Research and Development) of the medical formulations that Obagi create. Some of the experiments prove to not work. But a handful of products, prove to work extremely well. Those products which are approved, are the ones patients are able to access and use.
The cost of laboratories and scientists has to be paid before a product can be sold to patients. This ensures A) The product is safe and B) The product actually works.
As a medical skincare company, Obagi is committed to unleashing your skin's potential. They believe skincare is more than simply "correcting" or even "preventing" a patient's concerns.
What areas do Obagi products help?
Obagi products are created to work with patients' concerns in these key areas:
✦ Premature Skin Ageing
✦ Skin Damage
✦ Hyperpigmentation (Brown Patches)
✦ Sun Damage
As you can see - Obagi is focused, that is why Obagi products work. They are not the jack-of-all-trades, master of none. The company has a clear focus that filters down from the skincare experts that founded the company in 1988, right down to all the reps that talk about their products to clinic partners, like Mayer Monroe.
Skincare Routine ABCs
A - Vitamin A
You may have heard of "Retinol". Retinol is a derivative of Vitamin A. It comes in varying strengths (some of which are not available OTC (Over The Counter) and require a prescription) - something any of our medically-trained clinicians can help you with. Vitamin A is key in helping reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines and photodamage/ageing.
Don't get sucked into believing all retinol products are created equal - they are not. There are retinol products, and then there are retinol products (that have been tested) - be sure whatever retinol you decide to use, is from a trusted source.
B - Broad Spectrum Sunscreen
The number 1 product in your skincare routine should be a good quality broad-spectrum sunscreen. Remember, almost 80% of skin ageing (and the formation of fine lines and wrinkles) is caused by the sun!
C - Vitamin C
Vitamin C is a very popular skincare ingredient. It brightens the skin, evens the colour and tone of the skin, and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Crucially, it helps the overall appearance of photodamaged skin and provides a protective barrier against antioxidants.
Skin Tone and Skincare
A very important part of getting the most out of your skincare routine and products is understanding your skin tone. The way certain products work with a person's skin can depend largely on their Fitzpatrick type. If you would like to learn more about the Fitzpatrick skin scale we have produced a complete guide on skin tone here.
What products do Obagi offer?
In addition to the ABCs mentioned above, Obagi includes a range of different products including Facial Cleansers, Facial Toners, Antioxidants, Moisturizers, Sunscreens.
How do I get started with Obagi?
If you'd like to get started right away with Obagi, book a FREE 15-minute consultation with us here. Although, we understand you may not be quite read to have a chat, so perhaps filling out this skin questionnaire and letting us get back to you with your results makes you feel more comfortable.
Whichever approach you choose, you are in good hands at Mayer Monroe. Some customers that visit our online clinic find they aren't the right fit for Obagi. Their skincare challenge or goal may require a different product altogether.
For example, a simple course of antibiotics may solve a patient's problem. And in that case, our clinicians are trained to prescribe the patient the simpler (and cheaper) option rather than sell them Obagi products that won't help the problem.
You may not believe us when you read that but read our section here on why we set up Mayer Monroe and why our focus is on helping as many people as possible with skincare challenges. Obviously, our clinicians need to be paid for their time, but as a clinic, we feel much better knowing we are helping the skincare market to have a trusted source of information and advice.
"Mayer Monroe wants to be your trusted source of skincare advice (even if you don't buy from us)" - Dr Barbara Bromley (Medical Director of Mayer Monroe)
