The Reasons, Science and Treatment of Skin Ageing

This page explains the reasons why skin ages, the science behind it and effective treatment for it. Skin ageing is categorized into A) Intrinsic factors and B) Extrinsic factors.

  • Intrinsic Factors are the internal variables inside the body that people have very limited control over, such as genes and DNA.
  • Extrinsic Factors are the external variable outside the body that people have high degrees of control over, these include unprotected and overexposed sun light, tanning booth use etc.

A combination of these factors causes changes at a cellular level to a person’s collagen, elastin and melanocytes. All of which contribute to skin ageing.

Reasons For Skin Ageing

As we age, there is a decline in both the quantity and the size of our skin cells. As a result, our skin is less effective at being a critical barrier to protect our bodies.

Regulation of our body temperature is less efficient and there is a fall in the production of sweat, sebum and Vitamin D.

The skin becomes increasingly thin as we age due to the long-term reduction in collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. Cells ‘turn over’ less quickly and less often and the healing properties are impacted.

The factors that lead to skin ageing cause it to be drier as well as for fine lines and wrinkles to form.

Science Of Skin Ageing

  • Whether we’re 20 or 80+ years old and anywhere in-between, our skin is ageing, and mayer | monroe can help.
  • It is common knowledge that skin starts to sag through ageing. This sagging affect occurs because of structural changes in the bones, fat pads and tissue.
  • The affects of ageing are distressing for some of our clients, but can be particularly frightening for clients who see these changes in their late twenties and early thirties.
  • Modern science has made major advances in understanding the skin and how to slow down skin ageing.
  • Although we won't be able to restore your youthful looks completely, we are very confident that you should see wonderful results with the right treatment plan and protocol.

UV Light and Skin Ageing

If you have visited the mayer | monroe website or read any of our articles, it may seem like we are constantly being negative about the sun. We don't mean to, the whole team loves bathing in the sun, but the more we study and learn about the science of skin, the more precautions we take to enjoy the sun whilst appropriately protecting our skin.

UV-A and UV-B rays in sunlight are the biggest culprits. A helpful way to remember the difference between them:

UV - A (A for ageing) UV - B (B for burning)

And both together cause around 80% - 90% of skin ageing.
